MAJOR BOB KHATHING – A LEGEND

Major Bob Khathing was born in Ukhrul, a small hill town, in the year 1912. His achievements are invaluable. His contribution to the nation and the society are innumerable. Major Ranenglao(Bob) Khathing participated in World War II and performed exceedingly well as part of erstwhile 9/11Hyderabad Regiment. His contributions were recognized and he was awarded with Military Cross and Order of British Empire. Later, on the request of the Maharaja of Manipur State, he joined the interim Government of Manipur. In the year 1951, Maj Ranenglao Khathing was inducted in the Indian Frontier Administrative Service (IFAS) as Asst political officer. In this capacity he was given the responsibility of establishing Indian administration in Tawang region which he fulfilled along with troops of 2nd Assam Rifles and 5th Assam Rifles. For this invaluable contribution he was conferred with Padma Shri award. Maj Ranenglao Khathing also holds the credit for being the first Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung. He was also the first civilian to join National Defence College at New Delhi. Considering the rich experience, immense knowledge and his contribution to the nation, he was appointed as the first Indian ambassador to Burma in the year 1972. During his tenure in Burma he succeeded in improving mutual ties between India and Burma. Maj Ranenglao Khathing also worked for the betterment of society and for the people of his own tribe for which he will always remain in the people’s heart.
